The Province Archives is the Central Archives for the Australian Province of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Loreto, and holds records of Loreto foundations, missions and members since 1875.
The purpose of the Loreto Province Archives is to fulfil our legal and social responsibilities in the preservation of records of enduring value, to promote access to our cultural heritage by documenting and preserving relevant and historically significant records and artefacts and communicating the existence of this heritage to the I.B.V.M. and the wider community.
We welcome researchers and provide research assistance and facilities for genealogists, academics and public historians.
Our ‘Selected Guide to Loreto Archives’ won the Australian Society of Archives Mander Jones Award in 2007 and is a research tool providing an introduction to the Loreto Sisters in Australia and the archival collection.
In 2008 Sr Theresa Elliott, Archivist John XXIII and Robin Scott, Loreto Province Archivist both received awards at the Australian Society of Archivists’ Conference. Theresa for her publication ‘Resting beneath the Rainbow’ and Robin for the ‘Selected Guide to Loreto Collections’. Read more.
The Province Archives is located at the site of the first Loreto foundation in Australia in Ballarat.
