JPIC publications and events

The JPIC Committee publishes a quarterly newsletter called the "Ring of Fire" which is shared between Loreto JPIC committees in different countries. We run events and produce various information sheets and newsletters in order to raise awareness about the social injustices in the world and how we can influence policy, give a voice to the vulnerable and work together to motivate others into action.

Mary Ward Justice Lecture - promoting public discussion of key social issues
In 2005 the JPIC Committee held the inaugural Mary Ward Justice Lecture at Loreto College Kirribilli with Sharan Burrow, then President of the ACTU, as the keynote speaker. As well reflecting on his own work and experiences, Sharan Burrow discussed how national and international structures and organisations could contribute to making poverty history; and the connections between these and the millennium development goals. The event was so successful, attracting 300 people; that the Mary Ward Justice Lecture became an annual event.
Since then, the Mary Ward Justice Lectures have continued to attract much interest. Guests have had the opportunity to hear “conversations” between:
-
Linda Burney and Fred Chaney on Making Indigenous Poverty History, with Jenny Brockie as Chair (see above);
-
Fr Frank Brennan and Dr Attracta Lagan, tackling issues associated with ethics and justice in Public Virtue, Private Vice, with Dr Simon Longstaff as facilitator; and
-
Maxine McKew, Craig Reucassel and Margo O’Neill commenting on the media and social justice in Making a Noise, Making a Difference, with Anna Maria Nicholson as facilitator.
The Mary Ward Justice Lectures are planned in coordination with the Loreto Kirribilli and Normanhurst justice groups. The student justice captains of both schools participate by delivering a response (in the inaugural lecture) or by acknowledging and thanking participants.
In 2009, to celebrate 400 years of Mary Ward, the Mary Ward Justice Lecture, "Daring to Imagine, Willing to Risk: Keys for Social Transformation" was held at Loreto schools in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Ballarat, together with the book launch of "Loreto in Australia".
Keynote speaker, Pat Murray ibvm, Executive Director of Solidarity with Southern Sudan and past IBVM General Council member, suggested boldness and creativity are the keys for social transformation. She gave inspiring examples of single individuals bringing about significant social changes; highlighting that one individual has the capacity to do something small, but powerful, to help others.
With her theatre sports background and corporate motivational training, Josephine O'Reilly (Kirribilli, 1983), gave a witty and creative response, enabling and challenging participants to see how the issues discussed related to their everyday life.
