Our sisters

Mary Ward had an incredible gift of being able to imagine and risk to begin something other than what had always been. In this way, sisters often relocate to explore new possibilities, begin new initiatives or support others where the need is greatest.

“Lord, let that be possible to me by your grace which seems impossible to me by nature.”
Mary Ward

In Australia over 100 active and retired sisters live by and share the vision and mission of Mary Ward. They contribute their gifts, sometimes in employment and often in a voluntary capacity, in a variety of areas including:

  • Angela Slattery ibvm, Wendy Hildebrand ibvm, Deirdre Browne ibvmwelfare and social services
  • parish ministry and pastoral care
  • social justice
  • education
  • arts
  • spiritual guidance
  • theology

Sisters are often asked to respond to needs in other cities, remote places and distant countries. Often they are asked to leave significant responsibilities to serve elsewhere in challenging environments. Courage, commitment and generous openness underpin the work and life of a Loreto Sister.

"I would give this advice to someone considering entering: pray, get information, listen to your heart, discern with someone who is seeking only the deeper good."

Anne McPhee ibvm
