International leadership

The responsibility of the institute leader and her team is to promote the "union of hearts and minds" across very diverse provinces and to appoint province leaders in consultation with the sisters in the particular province.

“As a world-wide institute we are united through our charism. Union, not uniformity, is primary; and patterns of prayer, living and ministry will vary across cultures.”
IBVM Constitutions Vol ii 3.2

The IBVM Loreto international leadership team, the “Institute Council” is located in Rome, Italy. This team consists of sisters from Loreto provinces around the world: Marian Moriarty ibvm as "Institute Leader" and four "General Consultors".

The Institute Council seeks to:

  • ensure that provinces with less access to material resources are given the opportunities to develop the talents of their women so they can make a real difference within their own countries.

  • provide leadership that unites in hope and service of the wider church and world.

A General Congregation is held every eight years, where representatives from every Loreto province gather to elect the leadership team and to consider priorities and directions for the future. The General Congregation is responsible for setting the agenda for works and ministries around the world and the Institute Council is responsible for devising and implementing ways of progressing this agenda.

Working for the International Church

A number of Australian Loreto Sisters have held and continue to hold international leadership roles within the IBVM and the wider church community.

Mary Wright ibvm, former IBVM Institute Leader, is currently based in Rome working at the service of the church, for its people and community across all congregations. In 2008 Mary accepted a request by the Vatican to join the team of canon lawyers in the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Mary’s role is to assist religious congregations in their interactions with the Vatican concerning constitutions and related matters.

Sandra Perrettt ibvm, is based in Rome as  "Vicar General" on the Institute Council. Her role is to support the Institute Leader, Marian Moriarty, in her responsibilities for the governance, finance, formation, development and progress of the Institute. She is required to act as the Institute Leader in Marian’s absence.
