Achieving her goal - Laurene Hassard

"When I began I was nervous and uncomfortable about asking for money but now I am grateful for the experience. I have seen kindness, compassion and generosity. It is wonderful to know that many teenagers in a rural village in India will be given a chance for a better future as a result of this simple exercise."

In March 2010, Laurene Hassard travelled to India to see if she could contribute to the work of the Loreto Sisters in Kolkata or Darjeeling. She was inspired to assist the Loreto school at Panighatta Tea Estate and decided to raise funds for teacher salaries. Laurene returned home to see if she could achieve her goal.

"I live in a small, loving and generous community in the hinterland of the Gold Coast. In little over a week and to my great surprise and delight, I reached the target figure! I am a yoga teacher and I began my fundraising by simply telling my students about my experience with the Loreto Sisters and their amazing work. I let them know how much I needed to raise and on that day the donations started to pour in. I ran a raffle and within no time people were offering prizes! For the first time in my life I started selling raffle tickets. I held a "yoga charity class" and raised $360, two people gave me cheques for $200 and more donations were promised."
